In Feb. 2006, The DSL Joint Operation project between ZTE and Algeria Telecom has launched xDSL services. At the first phase, the installed capacity is 50, 000 lines. At the second phase, 20,000 lines have been installed; At the third phase, ZTE shipped 80,000 to AT. The project has been going very well since 2006.
There are 4 million fixed telephone lines in the country. The population penetration reaches up to 13%. Algeria Telecom (AT) is the incumbent state-owned telecom operator which offers various services such as fixed telephony, mobile telephony, data communication, transmission and satellite so on. AT is also the largest integrated telecom operator in Algeria. In 2002, AT is stripped from the telecom ministry of Algeria., inheriting most of the original telecom resources. So AT monopolizes the fixed telephone market though there are two fixed telephony licenses in Algeria. In the mobile market, Algeria Telecom Mobile is a wholly owned subsidiary of Algeria Telecom. It is the first mobile operator in the country and operates a GSM mobile network covering the whole nation. AT employs over 20,000 staff and has an expected income of US$900 million in 2004.
In 2004, AT starts to launch xDLS services. DSL services have been developing fast in the recent years. According to the estimation from AT, there will be 1 million xDSL subscribers in 2008.
The brand of DSL joint operation between AT and ZTE is “EasyDSL”.
